To get a chewy, tasty bagel, I boil these in water with a little bit of brown sugar. You can skip the boiling part - but I like them better boiled. Use Fage yogurt - that is fresh out of the container. If there is any liquid sitting in the yogurt container, pour it out. I try to get a smooth skin when I'm rolling out the shape of the bagel dough. The smoother they are in dough form, the smoother the bagels will be when they come out of the oven.

The brown sugar used in this recipe may add calories to the bagel. I'm not 100% sure how much of the sugar is actually absorbed into the bagel when boiling. Recipe makes 8 bagels.

You can find and purchase a Dough Cutter here.

Total Cook/Prep time: 60 minutes

  • For the dough:
  • 2 cups FAGE non-fat Greek yogurt
  • 2 cups self-rising flour
  • Other items:
  • 1 scrambled egg (used as a wash after the bagels are baked)
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 4-6 cups water
  • Sesame Seeds
  • Poppy Seeds
  • Everything Seasoning

Preheat oven to 425.

Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.

Prepare the dough:

Mix the flour and yogurt in a bowl. Mix to combine, folding it over itself as you go.

Place the dough on a lightly floured surface.

Divide the dough in 8 pieces.

Boil the water and add the brown sugar to the water.

Roll each piece into a log approximately 8 inches long.

Form the log into a circle, overlapping the end pieces.

Pinch the seams shut.

Repeat for remaining dough pieces.

One at a time, gently place each bagel into the boiling water and let it simmer 30 seconds - 1 minute.

Use a spatula to lift the bagel from the water to the baking sheet.

While the bagels are still wet, sprinkle them with seeds.

Bake for about 30 minutes or until golden brown. Every oven is different so check them after 20 minutes.

As soon as the bagels come out of the oven brush them with the egg wash (I use a pastry brush to do this). You do not need to put the bagels back in the oven after you brush them with egg wash. It's such a thin coat of egg, it will cook on the hot bagel.

Wait 30 minutes before cutting or eating them.
